Personality Disorders

Expert support tailored to your needs in a warm and welcoming environment.

Personality disorders describe a group of conditions where long-standing patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving cause distress or difficulties in daily life. One of the most recognised is Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), which affects around 2–6% of Australians and is often marked by challenges with emotional regulation, identity, and relationships.

There is no single cause of personality disorders, including BPD. These conditions often develop through a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. Many of the behaviours or symptoms seen in personality disorders are attempts to cope with other difficulties such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or complex interpersonal dynamics.

At Adaptive, we provide a supportive and trauma-informed approach to help you better understand and manage the symptoms of personality disorders. Our psychologists work with you to:

  • Build emotional regulation and distress tolerance skills

  • Strengthen communication and relationship patterns

  • Address underlying trauma and self-criticism

  • Develop practical coping tools for daily life and stability

While personality disorders can be complex, they are treatable. With the right therapeutic support, healing and meaningful change are possible.
